With the UK energy price cap rising by 2% from 1 October 2025, homeowners are once again feeling the pressure to keep costs down as temperatures drop and finding ways to make homes more energy-efficient through the colder months has become a growing priority. One simple yet stylish solution is window shutters, which can reduce heat loss by up to 51%[1], outperforming both blinds and curtains when it comes to energy efficiency.

Leading shutter specialist, ShuttersUp, has seen increasing demand from homeowners who value shutters not just for their timeless design, but also for their practical energy-saving benefits.

Ross Evans, co-founder of ShuttersUp, comments: “We've noticed more homeowners viewing shutters as a smart response to both cold winters and increasingly warm summers. In the winter, shutters help retain heat, while in the summer they keep rooms cool, shaded and naturally ventilated. They reduce the need for heating and cooling systems throughout the year, which helps to lower both energy use and carbon footprint.”

All ShuttersUp's made-to-measure shutters are crafted to regulate temperature naturally. Their innovative slat design can control the amount of solar heat and visible light that is let into a room and help homeowners to consume less energy by providing added insulation to keep heat in during winter, dramatically improving the energy efficiency of UK homes.

For London homeowner, Alice Trow, the benefits were immediate. She comments: “ShuttersUp installed our living room and bedroom shutters in October 2024 at the start of our renovation process – they instantly made the rooms look more beautiful and provided insulation, making them feel much more cosy. With both the shutters and our log burner, we don't need to put the heating on as much – shutters have definitely helped save on our energy bills.”

Alice's experience reflects a growing trend among UK households investing in energy-efficient improvements that combine comfort, sustainability and lasting style. Acting as a natural barrier against heat loss, shutters offer an effective way to reduce energy consumption and create a warmer, more sustainable home.

Editor's Notes:

[1] Research by Glasgow Caledonian University revealed that shutters reduce heat loss by up to 51%. In tests on a single-glazed sash window, researchers found:

  • Curtains reduced heat loss by 14%, a roller blind achieved 22%, a Victorian blind - 28%
  • Shutters cut heat loss by 51%, reducing the U-Value from 4.3 W/m²K to just 2.2 W/m²K
