Yukari Sweeney, a Japanese designer now living in London who has trained with Paul Smith and Eley Kishimoto and had her designs commissioned and displayed in Top Shop and Anthropologie, is now working on extending her collections which will be launched at 100% Design later this month.
As micro houses are so popular in Japan where a room can be dominated by even one complete wall of wallpaper, Yukari has started to examine how a sense of lightness and interest can be brought into these houses, many of which are as small as 300 sq feet. Architects are continually reviewing ways in which they can create a sense of more space in an urban home and Yukari's new collection is also tackling this from a design perspective. One of the objectives of Yukari Sweeney Design is not to compromise style with any limitations.
Yukari's Wish You Were Here collection has been entended to include the 'co-ordinated wallpaper' - where clients can choose whether to have a single design within a single drop of wallpaper or combine co-ordinated designs for a bolder effect.
The colourways of these designs are inspired by by Japanese traditional dying processes, especially the elegance with which colours age and develop depth as they mature. The Japanese indigo colour, 'ai-iro', is a dye established over two centuries ago; knotweed, a natural plant, is used to create the almost mystical colour that becomes paler with time, shifting from a deep blue to pale sky, all illuminating the beauty of the product that has been blessed with the colour.
Wallpaper panels are going to become more and more popular. The single or feature wall has had its day, yet many designs would overpower rooms if all four walls were decorated with them. Indeed, many rooms are too small to be wallpapered in anything but the plainest of designs. Yukari Sweeney Design's Co-ordinated Wallpapers with its choice of designs that can be used singly or combined together will be perfect for bring style, elegance and lightness in any home.
Available exclusively (within Ireland) at Garrendenny Lane Interiors www.garrendennylane.com, it can be ordered online.
The cost per panel is £80
