All entries are accompanied by a detailed botanical description of the herb's genus and species, its hardiness, growth habit, size and planting period. Learn about their beneficial properties and uses in cookery, cosmetics and herbal medicine.
Plus, a special warning symbol alerts you to potentially toxic or harmful herbs. Packed throughout with stunning colour photography The RHS Encyclopedia of Herbs provides a unique illustrated A–Z of both the familiar and rarely-seen species, so you'll always find what you're looking for.
Garden designs and planting plans, illustrated with photographs and artworks created especially for this book, give the gardener a wealth of ideas for planting and growing herbs no matter what size your garden is. Whatever your reason for cultivating them – for their taste, their scent or simply to admire – this is the essential reference for anyone interested in adding spice to their garden with herbs.
Deni Bown's is an acknowledged expert on herbs worldwide. Her fascination with gardening and botany started at an early age with a childhood attraction to her grandfather's lilies and tulips, which quickly developed into a passion for finding and identifying wildflowers. After a long and varied career in horticulture, Deni became a freelance botanical and horticultural writer and photographer; in 1986 she was a winner in the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. She lectures widely and often travels to remote parts of the world in search of unusual and rare plants.
