Colours can have a powerful impact on mood, particularly those that surround us in the home. This Blue Monday, 16th January, Quintain Living – the award-winning management company overseeing the rental of more than 3,651 homes in Wembley Park – is showcasing how the power of colour in the home can banish those blues.

Creating the right environment is not just a simple question of choosing colours at will. Colour theory is an established practice based on using the colour wheel to mix and match colours in a way that's visually appealing and that harmonises. Colour theory can be used to set the mood of a home, with leading colour theorists expounding the benefits of incorporating colour psychology into interior design. At The Robinson in Wembley Park, the theory can be seen in practice.

The original mood boards for the project design were bursting with colour and British eccentricity. Inspiration came from a range of sources that encapsulate elements of the British life and British togetherness. They range from front doors in Notting Hill to the Beatles' Yellow Submarine. British icons such as Paul Smith, Damien Hirst, Queen Elizabeth II, David Bowie and Grayson Perry were all inspirational in terms of the colours of the Robinson, as were a range of British landmarks and moments.

“We drew colour inspiration for The Robinson from sources as diverse as the Union Jack, original William Morris prints, the pink staircase in Frank's Café in Peckham, Penguin Books, oil drums in Covent Garden and Pink Floyd's floating inflatable pig at Battersea Power Station. Paul Smith's approach to mixing genres, themes, styles and colours became a driving force for our thoughts and ideas. We used mood boards to tie all this wit and quirkiness together and create a colour scheme designed to uplift, excite and energise. It encapsulates British eccentricity.”

The Robinson's commitment to colour is clear throughout, even in the lobby, where the bright pink of the post room serves to uplift and energise residents as soon as they arrive home. That sense of vibrancy permeates the building, from its shared social spaces to its comfortable, welcoming apartments.

In The Robinson's one-bedroom homes, the classic apartment layouts are brought to life through colour. The kitchens are the ultimate example of this in action, with tones representing flavours and spices brought back to Britain from across the Commonwealth. Residents can choose from a range of bold, exciting options, from jaffa orange kitchen units (which colour psychology states can deliver a sense of shelter, encouragement and motivation) to “British summer blue” kitchens that exude a sense of peace, security and tranquillity. And what could be better for starting the day with a sense of happiness and optimism than making your morning coffee in a stylish saffron yellow kitchen?

Living rooms are also awash with colour, from rich blue sofas dotted with bright orange and black and white cushions, to rich burgundy dining chairs, to lightshades that seem to glow green. In the bedrooms, the colours are warm and welcoming, ranging from deep, plush reds to warm blues, delivering a sense of relaxation and comfort to promote a good night's sleep.

The Robinson's bathrooms deliver a fabulous contrast, with a black and white, yin and yang design complemented by quirky touches such as handmade Liberty pattern lampshades. In colour theory, black evokes sophistication and drama, while white communicates clarity and purity. It's a fascinating contrast, to be enjoyed by residents getting ready for work or those getting glammed up for a night out.

“Colour can be a powerful driver of mood, which is why we've thought so carefully about the colour theory underlying every element of The Robinson. We've used colours to uplift, energise and inspire, as well as to calm and to relax.”

Take the residents' lounge. A vast bank of chairs in varying shades of yellow, which face a mixture of red, orange and pink seating, leads along the room to a London taxi that has been converted into a coffee station. It's painted in polka dots, à la Damien Hirst. Meanwhile, on the rooftop up above, which is connected to the residents' lounge by a 7m slide, a juice bar in the shape (and colour) of a giant orange sits beside a bank of red and blue-striped sun loungers. Shrubbery adorns the rooftop, planted in bright pink and blue painted oil drums.

Colour is also put to good use on The Robinson's other rooftops. On one, three bespoke, work-from-home campervans deliver a celebration of motivational yellows, blues and pinks. On another, a spa caravan with a hot tub bubbles beneath the wide-open sky.

Downstairs, deckchairs with bold, mood-boosting red, blue and yellow stripes adorn the podium garden lawn, while the Mad Hatter's Tea Party Garden is a celebration of colour. Giant, multi-coloured flowerpots and a wooden frame twined with climbing plants, festoon lights and imitation crystal chandeliers surround tables for outdoor dining. There's an oil-drum BBQ, while a bright pink kitchenette hides behind wooden panels.

“Colour can have such a positive impact on mood. You can feel this within The Robinson almost the moment you set foot inside – the building has an energy of its own. The apartments use colour to striking effect, not just to look stylish but to uplift and invigorate.”
