Leading architects Powell Dobson has recruited an award-winning designer to join its expanding Cardiff team.

Ian Pepperell, from Cardiff, brings 23 years experience to the practice, having worked on a variety of high-profile projects across the globe.

For the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Ian was consultant designer for a 100,000 sq m International Performing Arts and Conference Centre which hosted a number of events throughout the Olympic Games. The project formed a part of the infrastructure work throughout Athens in the build up to the world event.

Ian has also worked on a number of key projects across Wales, including the masterplanning, architecture and interior design of the 140,000 sq ft British Airways Avionics Facility in Llantrisant. The project won a Royal Institute of British Architecture (RIBA) award in 1992.

Other major projects Ian has worked on include the £25m Amersham International RP laboratory in Cardiff which scooped a RIBA award in 1987; the £330m Derby District General Hospital; £80m British Airways building at Heathrow; £45m Sainsburys Savacentre in London Colney and the £150m International Convention Centre in Birmingham. Speaking about his new appointment, Ian said: “Powell Dobson is a well-established practice and has grown to become one of the leading firms in Wales. “My latter experience has been at senior management level but I'm looking forward to moving into a hands-on role at Powell Dobson and working as part of the design team. I'll also be mentoring some of the newer architects at the practice”

Throughout his career, Ian's projects have picked up a number of prestigious awards including four RIBA awards, a Financial Times Architecture of Work Award and an Eisteddfod Gold Medal.

Before joining, Powell Dobson Ian was director of architecture at Capita Symonds UK for three years, and was previously board director at BDG McColl.

Ian continued, “The architecture industry in Wales is buoyant, with a strong shift towards quality. Over recent years, several large projects such as the Millennium Centre, the Millennium Stadium and the Senedd building have helped to raise Wales' profile.”

Tim Percival, director at Powell Dobson said: “Ian is a well-respected and extremely talented figure in the industry and we are thrilled to have him on board.

“He has a wealth of experience in architecture, masterplanning and interior design across several sectors and he's worked on some top international projects. Ian's design ability is second to none and we hope he'll be able to pass on his knowledge to some of our more junior members at the practice.”

He studied at the Welsh School of Architecture at the Cardiff University from 1962 – 1967 and is now an external examiner within the University of Wales Professional Practice Examination Board.

Architect's Journal Top 100 company, Powell Dobson, employs more than 110 staff from its two offices in Cardiff and Swansea and has worked on a number of high-profile projects including the Hilton Hotel, Cardiff, the award-winning Brewery Quarter in Cardiff and the revitalisation of Swansea Leisure Centre.
