Men Banished To The Bedroom For World Cup

Dads will spend half their time watching the England team matches on portable TVs after being banished to the bedroom, a new study has revealed.

While thousands of new large-screen TVs are being bought around the country in anticipation of the televised World Cup games, one in every two games will be watched on smaller portables as wives and girlfriends put their foot down.

A whopping 49% of games will be watched in the bedroom or kitchen, and not in the lounge on the main TV in our homes, the study by Betta Living has revealed.

The fitted kitchen & bedroom company polled 2,020 people across the UK about their planned TV viewing for the forthcoming World Cup and discovered that while the lounge is the most popular place to watch TV (54%), the bedroom is the second most likely place for us to watch our favourite programmes (38%).

And despite Dads having the TV remote in their hand more than anyone else in the family – a huge 68% of the time – during the World Cup it will be their wives and girlfriend who become temporary TV boss.

Of those polled (men and women), a massive 72% admitted that the final say on World Cup TV viewing will be down to the girls in 2010.

Men, if they're lucky, will get to watch just half of England's televised matches (47%) on their shiny new 32-inch HDTV in the lounge. The rest of the time they will be sent to the bedroom to watch it while their wives, girlfriends and children watch other programmes on the main TV in the lounge.

Barry Rourke, Betta Living spokesman, said: “We expected to see that the lounge is the most popular place for watching TV in our homes and, similarly, we believed that the bedroom would be the second most popular TV location.

“But we didn't expect to see Dads – clearly the boss when it comes to control of the TV remote in our homes – being relegated to the bedroom during the World Cup.

“It seems there will be so much football on TV during the tournament that most women, and a great deal of the Dads themselves, accept that the men will spend many of the games watching coverage in the bedroom or kitchen so the rest of the family can watch their favourite shows on the main TV.”

So much time will be spent watching England games in the bedroom over the World Cup that usage of bedroom TV's will triple from an average of five hours a week under normal circumstances to an astonishing 15 hours a week during the World Cup.

Fortunately for the Dads Betta Living has introduced a new TV bed especially for those banished to the bedroom during the World Cup tournament.

And it's already proving hugely popular across the country with orders running at three-times their usual amount in the run up to the international football competition.

The remote elevating TV-bed, which allows a flat screen television to be housed in the foot unit that automatically elevates up and hides away at the touch of a button, will not only impress your friends, but it can help to keep bedrooms minimal and chic.

The TV neatly tucks away in the foot unit when not in use, and offers the ultimate viewing position to watch your favourite programmes in comfort.
