The Giftware Association's prestigious Gift of the Year 2015 competition attracted the highest number of entries in recent memory and also sparked lively debate among this year's judges.
None more so than when it came to selecting the winner of The Judges' Choice prize, sponsored by Spring Fair, which was awarded to the Stoke-on-Trent produced Hinchcliffe and Barber Songbird Grey Ceramics from My GiftsTrade.
At a special ceremony at the NEC, attended by finalists, judges, GA Retail members and sponsors at the close of the opening day of Spring Fair 2015 (Sunday 1 February), internationally renowned product designer and Gift of the Year ambassador Sebastian Conran presented this coveted prize – for the outstanding product in the competition – and the awards to the winners of all 20 categories.
As part of The Judges' Choice prize, My Gifts Trade will also be given a free stand at Autumn Fair by the competition's headline sponsor, i2i Events Group, organiser of Spring Fair and Autumn Fair.
GA chief executive Isabel Martinson commented: “The 2015 competition has been a memorable one. We again strengthened our team of judges so that it would be representative of retailers of all shapes and sizes. And our suppliers have again stepped up to the plate to present a diverse array of innovative and beautifully designed products.”
Louise Young, Divisional Director Retail of i2i Events Group, said: “The Gift of the Year Awards co-hosted by Spring Fair creates a unique and significant commercial opportunity for those winners during the fair.
“And I am particularly thrilled that ceramics made in The Potteries have won The Judges' Choice award. Buyers will be able to order them at Spring Fair, where many other companies who have been successful in this year's competition are also exhibiting, giving buyers immediate access to next season's best sellers.”
One company, j-me,won two Gift of the Year categories this year – Kids and Under £10 – for its Animal Toothbrush Holders.
Beefayre triumphed in Body, Bath and Spa with its Waggledance Collection, while Branded/Character was won by Fascinations Star Wars 3D Metal Construction Kits from Professor Puzzle.
Treat Gifts claimed the Commemorative and Collectable Gifts award for its Personalised Brass Travellers Compass, with Sew Heart Felt taking the Eco Friendly prize for its Felt Animal Puppets.
Burgon & Ball's Love the Glove was victorious in Fashion Accessories, while Fashion Jewellery was won by Martick Jewellery for Branch Out. Talking Tables claimed the Festive and Seasonal award with Skeleton Crew.
Enigma's Citronella Wood Wick Patio & Picnic Candles took the Garden and Outdoor Living prize, while The Lagoon Group's Battery Powered Paper Planes won Gifts for Men.
Amber Bright Creations triumphed in Home Accessories with the Vintage Light Bulb, with Stone Glow Candles winning Home Fragrance with its Modern Apothecary Candles.
Hot Novelty saw Paladone Products victorious with its Rubik's Cube Light, and T&G Woodware's CrushGrind Optic Mills claimed the Kitchen and Dining prize.
Judges' Choice winner My Gift Trade collected the Made in UK award for
The Hinchcliffe and Barber Songbird Grey Ceramics, while Occasions was won by Ginger Ray's Photo Booth Prop Range. Turtletech Design took the Premium/Luxury award for the Cassini Terrestrial MOVA Globe.
Wild & Wolf's Ted Baker Ladies' Stationery triumphed in the Stationery category and The Art File took the Card and Wrap prize for FORM.
New judge Anna Rigby, the John Lewis Partnership's Head of Buying, Home Accessories, Gifts and Seasonal, commented: “The category that stood out for me overall was Made in UK. I think it had the best quality as a group and I particularly liked the Hinchcliffe and Barber ceramics.”
Here, she also favoured the Rustic Welsh Ash Chopping Board from Treat Gifts, which was also entered in Eco-Friendly. “The fact that you can personalise it and that it's eco-friendly and made in the UK fits with the current trends we are finding regarding demand.”
Anna also liked the “really slim and well designed” Compact Lenses in Body, Bath and Spa from That Company Called If and, in the same category, the X1 Nero Black Razor and Razor Case from Bolin Webb.
In Hot Novelty the Egg and Soldiers from Choc on Choc – also in Under £10 – appealed, as did the Professor Puzzle Fascinations Star Wars 3D Metal Construction Kits in Branded/Character.
The Blossom and Brogues I Spy game from Talking Tables caught her eye in the Occasions category, as did The Lagoon Group's Christmas Origami.
The Vintage Light Bulb from Amber Bright Creations in Home Accessories and Gifts for Men, and the WeWOOD Kappa Chocolate Watch (Eco-Friendly and Fashion Jewellery) found favour, as did Keep Me Jewellery (Fashion Jewellery) from the company of the same name.
Stone Glow stood out for her in Home Fragrance – “they are very good at what they do” – and she also liked Takes and Adders from House of Marbles in the Kids category.
Skeleton Crew from Talking Tables presented “an interesting take on Halloween for adults” in Festive and Seasonal, while Uberstar's HOST Chill Cooling Pour Spout in Kitchen and Dining was “a bit different”.
In Fashion Accessories, the Love the Glove gardening gloves from Burgon & Ball were popular with several judges, including Anna, who also mentioned Parlane International's Love to Grow Collection (Garden and Outdoor Living).
The New Supersize Aztec Gem Terrarium from The Urban Botanist was her “standout” product in Premum/Luxury, where she also voted for Turtletech Design's “amazing” Cassini Terrestrial MOVA Globe. Anna chose The Lagoon Group's Battery-powered Paper Planes in Gifts for Men, while in Stationery she liked Thinking Gifts' Desktopus. In Under £10, the Senior Moments Flipbook (Boxer Gifts) and Essential Tools (Burgon & Ball) caught her eye.
Richard Barker, of Dorset Retail, who has four shops, commented: “There were some very good innovative products. What I like is where a company takes something traditional and makes it into something genuinely different.”
So which companies had achieved this? “T&G Woodware's salt and pepper set looked original and stylish. Wild & Wolf's Ridley's Games were made special by very clever packaging and Burgon & Ball's gardening gloves turned a mundane object into a desirable gift,” he said.
Martin de la Fuente, Ocado's senior buying manager of non-food products – another new judge – thought the gift and home categories were “very well presented”.
In Eco Friendly he described The Reusable Gift Box Crackers (Hellebore design) from Keep This Design as “a particularly nice product”. In Gifts for Men, Bluw's Lightsaber BBQ Tongs were “a bit of fun for the man who has everything”. In this category he also liked the Steam Railway items from Widdop Bingham. The aforementioned Vintage Light Bulb also caught his eye.
His favourite product across all the categories was the Culinary Concepts 4oz Hip Flask in Premium/Luxury, although his “bling of the year award” went to the Bass Buds 24 Carat Gold Collection from Electro Box.
Said Martin: “We are already buying a number of the products that were shortlisted and will be looking to add to those.”
Simon Woolgrove, senior buyer for Achica, noted that there was “quite a lot of nostalgia around that is reflected in packaging, but not one colour or one look that covers the judging room, which is quite surprising”.
He commented: “Some of the garden products and jewellery looked quite nice and I loved the terrarium in Premium/Luxury.” He also thought Gift Republic's Mr Men growing range in Garden and Outdoor Living and Branded/Character was “a good way of getting kids to grow things in the garden”.
Several judges believed that while a number of the products had appeal, their price points were unrealistically high and therefore stood little chance of winning or being highly commended in their category.
The GA is celebrating the success of winners, with product and company photos on www.giftoftheyear.co.uk and www.ga-uk.org, as well as Facebook and Twitter.
