Introducing Kate Medlicott and her fabric collections

Introducing Kate Medlicott

Colour is very much at the centre of Kate Medlicott's fabrics and homewares. Bold colours and simple motifs contrast with flamboyant one-off designs, often influenced by Kate's time in the Far East.

Having grown up on an organic farm, surrounded by wildlife, Kate studied Fine Art and History of Art, before being drawn to a career working in business in London, Singapore and Hong Kong for much of her twenties and early 30's.

However, Kate's return to rural England heralded the start of a return to the creative arts and a fabric design commission which set her off on a new career, forming Kate Medlicott Studio in 2016, with her first two fabric collections following earlier this year.

Now living and working near Glastonbury, Somerset with her husband and two children, Kate is excited to introduce her company, selling fabrics, cushions, handmade lamps and lampshades to a wider audience.

About the Collections

Her two inaugural fabric collections, Asian Sojourn and Flowers and Stripes, reflect both the breadth of Kate's travels and her wish to create something that works for British audiences, combining seed head motifs with cockatoos and more exotic blooms.   Inspired both by the bright colours of the manic metropolises from her exotic life abroad and the unspoilt nature at home and away, she has mixed vibrant colour with the more muted tones of teal, ochre and soft pink to provide unexpected balance.

Not afraid of the motto, “less is more”, Kate likes to give space to her motifs which are all hand drawn in pencil or ink and in some cases embroidered, before being digitally reproduced. She believes a thoughtfully placed hue can inject energy and beauty into a design and takes great pride in her designs being colourful, bold and simple and 100% British designed and made.

Asian Sojourn

Asian Sojourn uses motifs of exotic plants and birds in the core colours of Turquoise, Teal, Coral Pink and Stone to represent the suns and seas of the Far East.  These core colours are contrasted by fabrics in Yellow Ochre, Dusky Pink and Cloudy Blue and flower heads more commonly found in the UK.  The full collection combines to great effect to create a bold yet workable collection for both international and British climes.

Six designs in a variety of colours make up this collection of 22 fabrics

RRP for fabric: £45/m.

Flowers and Stripes

Flowers and Stripes lives up to its' name with a collection of delicate faded floral outlines, juxtaposed with strong bright colours and softer Ikat style prints in Yellow Ochre, Teal and Fallow.   To round this collection off, plain brights pull the collection together.

Six fabrics in a variety of striking colours make up this collection of 24 fabrics.

Each fabric design is printed in the UK onto British woven linen union and fabric from either collection can be mixed together.

RRP for fabric: £45/m

Cushions: available in a variety of shapes & sizes, piped or plain, from RRP £30

All of these fabrics and cushions are available from www.katemedlicott.com, together with handmade lamps and lampshades.
