Welsh Oak Frame opens the doors to a new 'show home'
Paul Edmunds, director of Welsh Oak Frame, has been busy with his own renovation project and is inviting visitors to see the work in progress.
Paul's new home in Powys is an unusual 'build' involving the restoration of a traditional one-bedroom Welsh cottage, the conversion of an adjoining barn and a new oak-framed glazed extension.
Paul is keen for visitors to experience oak framing first-hand and see the various ways oak can be used in the home. He says: "While the magazines are great with their lovely photographs of oak frame houses, there is nothing like physically walking around an oak frame home and seeing how the structure works, and how the oak feels, because it is very tactile," he says.
The cottage was renovated with a new oak frame, and the barn was rebuilt using an oak frame to create a galleried kitchen area. The new extension is currently being built with an oak frame too and demonstrates how large areas of glass can transform a space and make the most of the views.
Paul's home also shows the skill of the Welsh Oak Frame design team, who have orientated the house to maximise solar gain, and come up with a design that has satisfied a restrictive planning policy.
"We increased the size of the property significantly so we had to show consideration to how the new extension would blend with the existing old barn and cottage," Paul explains. "It was a long period of negotiation but it was our use of natural materials like oak, stone and slate that swayed it. We could define the different parts of the house and still be sympathetic to the local vernacular."
