Soft fruit has never been more popular, according to mail order kitchen garden supplier D. T. Brown. The trend is reflected in the company's introduction of four raspberry varieties new to its recently published Fruit and Vegetables Catalogue 2009.

Raspberries Glen Fyne and Cascade Delight are offered as potted canes and both are priced at £9.95 for three plants. Glen Fyne is an excellent, Scottish-bred, mid-season variety with a superbly sweet flavour and aroma. The bright red fruits are firm and conical in shape, while the moderately vigorous canes are spine-free, so picking is a pleasure. Cascade Delight is a vigorous and high yielding variety which produces its very large, firm fruits from early July through to August. D. T. Brown claims it shows very good resistance to root rot, making it a great choice for wet areas, where other raspberries may have failed.

Also new to D. T. Brown for 2009 are Autumn Treasure and Allgold. Autumn Treasure crops in late August and early September on upright, spine-free canes which are resistant to strains 1-4 of the large raspberry aphid, root rot and Verticillium wilt. The berries are conical, have a bold, bright colour and very good flavour. Six bare-root canes cost £9.95, while 12 cost £16.95.

Raspberry Allgold is a sport of the renowned Autumn Bliss. The company believes the large, golden yellow berries of Allgold are sweeter than those of its parent. It is an outstanding autumn cropper, any surplus of which can be successfully frozen for future use. Six bare root canes cost £10.95, while a dozen are offered for £19.90.
