Celebrating the intersection of craft and material intelligence Deformation Study opens on 30 October at Henge London. The evening features Monika Patuszyńska 'In Conversation With' Grant Gibson, co-founder of Material Matters, followed by an opening reception set among the exhibition, which remains on view until 29 November.  

'Curated Connections: Polish Design Across London' initiated by On&On Designs, is a three-part series of curated presentations produced with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland, the Polish Cultural Institute in London and the Let's Art Foundation. 'Chapter 3 – Deformation Studies' presents Monika Patuszyńska, a visionary Polish ceramic artist, designer, and curator whose practice blurs the boundaries between object, material, and spatial gesture. Celebrated internationally for her bold explorations of porcelain and plaster, she embraces fracture, imperfection, and transformation as central aesthetic forces.

Rooted in experimentation and material intelligence, Patuszyńska transforms the language of clay into a poetic narrative of reconstruction and renewal. By deconstructing and recombining discarded moulds, she creates unexpected negative spaces and sculptural 'mongrel' forms. Embracing error and accident as creative forces, seams are intentionally preserved, cracks and fissures - elevating materials often associated with commercial kitsch into striking works of art.  

At Henge, Patuszyńska presents three distinct collections alongside a selection of individual larger pieces - twenty pieces in total, inviting discovery throughout this unique space. The 'Cherished Disasters' series is intentionally cast to deform. Each object records its own distortion tracing the point where intention gives way to material agency, and deformation becomes a tool turning collapse into method - leaving behind both a failure and a choice. 

'From the Bastards' series (2024/25) asks what if porcelain doesn't want to be a vessel anymore but a material event, resisting utility, refusing perfection and speaking of memory, not function? The result is a record of a negotiation, as artist and porcelain stop trying to control each other and start listening instead. The third collection on display, 'Study of Deformation' (2025), is a search for a form's inner tensions, its confession - an admission of strain. Patuszyńska questions if materials have a need to emancipate themselves, seeing herself as not a creator but a companion to their material independence.

As part of the UK / Poland creative season 'Curated Chapters' continues the celebration of Polish innovation, craftsmanship, and cultural exchange through its series of three creative exhibitions. Running concurrently across London this autumn, the three chapters offer a rare opportunity to explore and enjoy a full spectrum of contemporary Polish design.

Monika Patuszyńska  

Artist and curator, explorer of abandoned spaces and untried paths, member of the International Academy of Ceramics (AIC/IAC). In 1999 she graduated from the Faculty of Ceramics and Glass at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław. She was the last designer at the Zakłady Porcelitu Stołowego Pruszków (Pruszków Table China Factory) and the last president of the International Ceramics Symposium “Porcelain Another Way”. Between 2014 and 2016 she held the position of the Artistic Director at the Institute of Design in Kielce. Thanks to cooperation with the New York office of the architect Peter Marino, her works can be found in the Maison Guerlain salon in Paris, the Chanel in Singapore or the famous Tiffany's boutique in New York Addicted to porcelain.
