The contemporary kitchen is functional and beautifully designed. With clean edges, smooth finishes, and clear surfaces, it encourages tranquillity at home. Yet there are those that fear sterility from a combination of light colours and blank space. A saturation of colour is the solution.
“Colourful kitchens can still be clean-cut and contemporary,” says Chris Dance, Showroom Manager at InHouse Inspired Room Design. “A deep saturation of colour exudes opulence, especially when coupled with high-end finishes. Marble, porcelain, and metallic details will help to break up the space, as will lighting that plays with shadows and tones.
“Under-cabinetry lighting is not only ideal for illuminating tasks. Aesthetically, its pools of light and shadow add atmosphere and a variety to a single-toned kitchen. Lighting deserves to be as much of a kitchen design as its colour and cabinetry style.”

For an alternative approach, use colourful kitchen cabinetry to break up floor-to-ceiling colour. It makes the kitchen a true statement piece for the home.
“If mix and matching different cabinetry colours,” says Chris Dance, “you need to understand how they work with each other, the colour of walls, ceilings, and floor, and any natural and artificial light. The tones will look slightly different in different shadows and spotlights, so think about the kitchen's atmosphere throughout the day.”
The next125 Colour Concept, refreshed in 2022, aims to 'find the optimum balance between uniqueness and conformity and to design the colours to be unusual yet also easy to mix and match'. Divided into Essential, Elegant, and Exceptional colours, the concept roams from Crystal White, to Tuscany Yellow, Jaguar Green, Cognac and more.
