What better way to enjoy the Coronation celebrations than with a pool party!

A home swimming pool can provide excellent health and wellbeing benefits, creating a great lifestyle for the whole family, from physical exercise to socialising. And a pool party is a fantastic opportunity to get together with your family and friends, for a pool party.

People across the country and the Commonwealth are invited to celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort over a weekend of special events on 6–8 May with hopes of glorious weather.

For those planning a pool party, the experts at SPATA have provided five top tips to help to get the party started:

  1. Set the party scene

You can achieve the Coronation party theme by decorating your pool surroundings; you could consider using a colour theme of red, white and blue, with festoons of union flags or bunting. The scene can be set with party table decorations, a gazebo, balloons, lanterns and pool accessories. For themed party inspiration, visit the government website, coronation.gov.uk, for resources and tools to plan your party.

  1. Create party zones

Your pool will be the star attraction, but your guests will probably not all decide to be in the pool at the same time. So adding zones to your garden can be a great way to give your guests different areas to enjoy. A gazebo can make an excellent chillout zone with an outdoor rug, and some scatter cushions or beanbags. Create a dining area with a few tables and a long table runner with themed decorations. If you have child guests attending, you could add a teepee or arrange some large open umbrellas as a shaded kid's zone. And if your party is set to run into the evening, light up your garden with festoon lights, submissive pool lights and fairy lights.

  1. Pool decorations, accessories and games

Every pool party needs accessories, and there are many ways you can get creative, from decorating your pool with inflatables to floating Hoola Hoops filled with LED balls or balloons - the possibilities are endless! If you want to stay on theme, add inflatable crowns, 'union flag' beachballs, and themed inflatable drinks coolers. It doesn't stop there, pool noodles are great for floating around in the pool, but they can also be utilised for party games such as limbo, an obstacle course, and balloon games. The best place to start looking for these is your local pool showroom, as they will stock lots of great pool-related accessories. Please ensure that once the games are finished, all of the equipment is removed from the pool, to reduce the temptation for a child to go back into the water. It is vital that children are supervised at all times if they can get into the water.

  1. Lights, music and live screening

Some pools have built-in LED lights to create the perfect atmosphere for a party or relaxation. But if yours doesn't, you could purchase suitable water-proof floating or submersible LED lights to set the scene. You can arrange your music set-up around your pool; water-resistant portable speakers will do the job and can easily be linked to your mobile phone using Bluetooth. Why not invest in a projector to watch the events of the Coronation celebrations on a big screen? After the event, a projector is great for outdoor movie nights or celebrating your favourite sporting events with your family and friends. But you must ensure that any outside electrical sockets are protected by an appropriate RCD and extension leads are not trip hazards, and that they are kept as far as possible from the poolside (hence the water).

  1. Be Prepared

A couple of days before your party, make sure that your pool is clean, and the water is balanced by testing your water and then adding any appropriate chemicals. You should also check your pool is in good working order and that your pool equipment is secure and in good condition. As mentioned above, ensure to put safety first; children should always be supervised by a responsible person when in and around water. If alcohol is being consumed at the party, adults should act responsibly and ideally not enter the water.
