BCB International Ltd, A 165-year-old Cardiff-based manufacturer, have developed the world's first solid bio-ethanol fuel dubbed the Firelighter of the future. As we know with the third wave of the pandemic staycations are going to reach an all-time high. With this comes a resurgence for both BBQs and fire pit socialising with families and small groups.

 'FireDragon'. Following extensive research, development, laboratory and field trials, the UK's Ministry of Defence (MoD) were the first to adopt 'FireDragon' fuel. The UK Government published its Clean Air Strategy which outlined a number of measures it will take to clean up our air including the introduction of new legislation to prohibit the sale of the most polluting fuels.

It's all in the chemistry. FireDragon are using ethanol which is derived from 100% plant based materials, the chemical chain is very short. This means it doesn't take much energy to break it down unlike complex hydrocarbons or fossil fuels. Also within FireDragon there is an oxygen molecule waiting to be released. This all adds to the hot intense burn from FireDragon and means it is easy and simple to light, works when wet and is most importantly not as bad for the environment as most other solid BBQ or firelighters.

There are thousands of acres of trees planted, mainly in South East Asia, to be specifically then used to be made into fire lighters. This is then sold as “sustainability sourced wood”. Surely it would be better to leave these trees grow rather than cut them down and use them as firelighters? The ethanol we use is derived from waste vegetation.
