One of the North West's leading interior designers Sarah Jane Nielsen is celebrating her second award in just a month.
Sarah, based in the Lake District, was awarded top prize in the Northern Design Awards Residential Interior Design category and shortlisted for the Hotel Interior Design class only weeks after picking up an award for Hotel Interior Design at the prestigious UK Design Awards.
The trio of accolades have been awarded for Sarah's work on an innovative Spa Lodge scheme at the Gilpin Hotel, near Windermere in the English Lakes.
The Gilpin Spa Lodge scheme, which nestles in the hotel's private grounds, is a new addition to this fine Relais and Chateaux boutique hotel and comprises five individually-designed detached timber cabins, each with luxury accommodation and its own treatment area, steam room, rain maker shower, free standing oval bath, sauna and hot tub.
The interiors are attracting glowing reviews from delighted guests and Sarah, whose studio is based in nearby Stavely, in Cumbria, is 'thrilled and proud' to have her work recognised by these prestigious awards. Concepts for each interior were inspired by Sarah's own global travels and represent different stages of her own journey, with themes taken from her Scandinavian roots and time spent in the Middle East, America and North Africa.
In Sarah's signature style, she adopted an eclectic approach, both to the design of the lodges and to the selection of different fabric houses and other suppliers to create an interesting mix of texture and colour, resulting in bespoke schemes that are each unique.
Individual designs for each one set out to maximise the unique Lake District setting to deliver, both indoors and out, a feeling of wellness and 'escape'. Each has its own distinct personality providing discerning guests with a choice of décor according to personal preference and an interesting option of selecting a totally different experience for their next visit.
Internally, each has a large bedroom and a distinct lounge space, both designed to take advantage of the stunning views. A convertible spa area has been incorporated into each lodge with treatment beds stowable out of sight in the wardrobe area. Bathrooms are divided into two distinct areas, separating the spa with sauna and hot tub from traditional bathroom facilities. The ultimate result overall has been the provision of a fully immersive guest experience.
She explains, “Inspired by the heritage of the area and the pedigree of the Gilpin Hotel, we set out to create five exclusive lodges that would soothe mind, body and soul. Whatever the season or weather, the Gilpin Spa Lodges sit comfortably within their environment and guests leave with a feeling of wellbeing. The Spa Lodges have for us been an interesting and rewarding project and we took great pleasure at arriving at solutions which we believe to be both beautiful and practical.”
