As more of us turn to smart technology both to simplify our lives and future-proof our homes, Worcester, Bosch Group, has unveiled a brand new update for its Wave internet-connected heating control App. This latest update enables both existing and newly installed Wave controls to work with smart phones, tablets and even smart watches, to offer even greater heat-convenience and energy-efficiency.

Now incorporating self-learning technology too, Worcester's Wave App can take into account how you use your heating and hot water, and programme the system in the most efficient way to suit. So you can be sure your home works purely around your needs.

Just as the original Wave App allowed you to control your heating and hot water whenever and wherever you are using a wireless internet connection and a smart phone or tablet, this latest version is now one of the few on the market that can also be used with the latest wearable technology for even greater convenience. The free-to-download Wave App can be hosted on both Apple and Android smart watches, so you can give your hot water a boost before the end of your run or pop the heating on your way home from work with ease.

Should you be lucky enough to have a second home or holiday abode too, the new Wave App makes it possible to control two Wave programmers from the same app screen; ideal to keep an eye on the heating system when you are not there or to simply switch on the heating or hot water when you are on your way for a visit.

Worcester's Wave is unique in offering Load Compensating* and Weather Compensating* features, which ensure the controller works intelligently with your boiler to only fire up at the power needed to reach the right temperature or in line with actual, current weather conditions. In fact, when a Wave is combined with a one of Worcester's Greenstar i, Greenstar Si or Greenstar CDi Compact combi boiler models, your heating system could boast an impressive 98 per cent A+ efficiency rating – meaning 98p of every £1 spent on fuel is converted to heat energy.

Additionally, taking away the mystery which often surrounds the amount of energy you use on heating and hot water, the Wave App can track your fuel usage on a month by month basis, so you can monitor where your spending goes. Importantly, all information is stored only on your Wave itself, and not on any external servers, keeping your data private and secure.  Should you lose internet connection at any point, the Wave will still operate as an intelligent room thermostat without it.

Martyn Bridges, director of technical support at Worcester, said:

“Heating our homes as effectively as possible is important, and with so many of us using smart phones, tablets and now, increasingly, wearable technology on a daily basis, the Wave control means that we can use this portability to make sure our homes are both comfortable and efficient at all times.

“For many of us, knowing when and how to set our heating controls for best effect can often be a mystery. Now, as well as the Wave controller looking sleek on the wall, the latest version of the Wave app includes technology that will take this guesswork away by monitoring your usage and setting the system to meet your heating and hot water needs in the most fuel efficient way.

“The beauty of the Wave is that is gives additional options to monitor the temperature of the house and only put the boiler on at the power that is absolutely necessary, to create programmes around individual usages or even change it in line with the weather, to make an effective system that works around the homeowner.”

The Wave smart controller can be easily fitted by a qualified installer and doesn't need an extra hub into your router or any mains voltage wiring as it is powered by low voltage wires directly connected to the boiler. All updates to the App are automatic and free-of-charge to make sure you always have the latest version.

Expect to pay around £250 for Worcester's Wave internet-connected control when installed by your qualified heating engineer.

Heating terms explained:

  • *Load compensation: The controls have built in sensors to monitor the actual temperature of the room. Rather than just being 'on' or 'off', when heat is called for, the control only fires up your boiler at the power needed to reach the required temperature be that quarter, half or full power for example.
  • **Weather compensation: Again, rather than just 'on' or 'off', a weather compensating feature will work with local weather stations or an outdoor sensor to monitor the outdoor temperature in 'real time' to help maintain a comfortable temperature in your home. So if it suddenly becomes milder than expected and your boiler is not needed to heat your home, the control will not ask it to fire up and vis versa on colder than expected days. This feature is shown to increase your systems efficiency by an additional up to 4%.
